Smoking - do you want to see it banned?
A smoky bar
Should cigarettes and alcohol come as a package?

In the week when a hard hitting stop smoking campaign is launched, and MPs debate the issue, one pub near Ripon has gone ahead with a ban anyway.

Drinkers at the Staveley Arms can no longer light up with their pint.

From the 14th of February drinkers at the Staveley arms can't light up with their drink. Mike Dry and Elaine Little thought Valentine's Day would be the ideal time to ban smoking in their pub, not realising their action would co-incide with a parliamentary debate on the issue.

They say it makes sense to get used to a smoke free pub now rather than wait for the law to change. Mike and Elaine believe that far from losing trade, a smokeless pub will encourage more people to use their restaurant.

And as both of them are smokers themselves they'll be sharing the sacrifice, and hoping the ban will give them the encouragement they need to kick the habit.

But what do you think? Should pubs and clubs be exempt from the ban? Should there be a ban at all?

We went into York city centre one lunchtime to find out what people thought. If you want to comment, fill in the form at the bottom of this page.

the whole point of smoking is to be sociable. groups of people hanging around outside, smoking is very sociable. friends smoke together and some of the reasons people start smking is becuase they are part of a crowd who smoke.

daniel
as a smoker i do not liek the bands. if you dont want to smoke then DONT. i thought that we had free will but it fells like we have no say in whatlaws ther are. i think that the goverment does not what to band smoking like they have with drugs such as weed because they get to much money of the taixs and they can loose all that money, so what does that say? that are goverment puts money frist over are own heath?

wel if you're gonna ban smoking completely, get the NHS up to scratch, cos elseways you're gonna have a whole load of former smokers trying to quit so they dont get arrested/fined or what have you, and the NHS won't have the facilities to accommodate their needs. I think people should be allowed to smoke at home, but guys, try not to do it around children. Makes my lungs hurt in pain.
