It's official, we're a nation of chocaholics! In the UK, we
eat about 200 bars of chocolate each a year!
Whether it's handmade or
mass-produced we all love it! We've been inside the Smarties factory
in York to find out how they're made.

York has a long history of chocolate making.
The Rowntree factory in the city was built in 1906 and still employs
over 4,000 people.

Now part of the international firm Nestle, the factory makes 98,000
tonnes of milk chocolate, 7,000 tonnes of chocolate and 3,500 tonnes
of white chocolate. In this process they use 166 million litres
of milk and 345,000 sacks of cocoa beans.
Perhaps the most famous product made in York is Smarties, when
our request to tour the factory was (finally!) approved we jumped
at the chance. You too can peek behind the scenes and watch the
sweets being made.
