After his successful final assault on the summit of Kangchenjunga
in Nepal, North Yorkshire's Alan Hinkes has become the first Briton
to climb all mountains over a height of 8,000m.
» Do you think Alan should receive a Knighthood?
Alan spoke to BBC Radio York about his sense of relief at completing
the challenge:
"It's a sense of freedom that I've got. The number of times
I've spoken to you over the last few years as I've been trying to
complete this challenge and I've finally done it.
"I did actually try to hard. I broke my own rule but I did
surprise myself. I'm over 50 now but I felt as fit as I did 20 years
ago. I was well acclimatized and physically there didn't seem to
be much problem.

Hinkes proving that no challenge is too small |
"Mentally I was getting burnt out because of the risks and
the weather was bad. I was thinking 'oh no I'm going to have to
come back again, how do I tell people I haven't done it'.
"But I don't have to do it any more. I don't have to risk
death in the death zone any more. I can enjoy myself in the Yorkshire
Hills, it's great."
Should Alan be Knighted?
His success has led to calls for Alan to receive a Knighthood,

ALAN HINKES IS A GREAT BRITON!HE TRULY DESERVES A KNIGHTHOOD, A ROLE MODEL TO OUR ASPIRING ADVENTURERS!
CB
I think Alan should be knighted. We don't have many real heroes these days it seems and Alan showed huge determination, grit, courage and fortitiude to do what he has done. The country should be proud to recognise and applaud him for his achievement.
