Confessions of a Mischief Night brat!

Trick or treat?

What's your opinion of Halloween? Do you see it as an innocent bit of fun for the kids or are you wary of the darker side of Halloween?

One email to this website voiced grave concerns over the more sinister aspects of this Autumn festival.

Andy emailed the website, he believes we shouldn't be promoting the celebration of Halloween, because of the dangers of encouraging children to become interested in the supernatural. His email prompted a response from an Occultist.

"Halloween encourages children to become interested in occult practices and to regard witches as joke figures. Satanists who practice witchcraft are dangerous people who lead the vulnerable astray. Teenagers who experiment with ouija boards, palm-reading and other occult practices can often get drawn into dangerous cults where they are at risk."

Furthermore, Andy also disagrees with the American imported practice of Trick or Treat. I wonder what he's make of the Yorkshire phenomenon 'Mischief Night'?

"Halloween has also taken on board the dreadful American custom of 'trick or treat' where often aggressive youngsters frighten the elderly and vulnerable by knocking on doors and demanding money etc. Do we want young people wandering about at night (often dressed in black and therefore hard for motorists to see as I have experienced at first hand), approaching strangers, and celebrating an occult festival?"

Reply from an Occultist

However on reading Andy's views, one Occultist from Pickering was prompted to voice his response:

"The problem I have with Halloween as an Occultist is that it is now a commercial perversion of an old Celtic festival, that of new year.

"Your emailer has it completely wrong when he says: "Halloween encourages children to become interested in occult practices and to regard witches as joke figures."

"Halloween, as previously mentioned, in its true form has no occult connections whatsoever. Any that are there have been laid on over the years in the interests of commercialism. Wicca and such like are big business.

"What's wrong with regarding most witches as joke figures? Most of them are! Have you ever met any of these people, and I use the word 'people' reservedly? Why do they all feel a need to wear cheap and nasty 'symbolic' jewellery that makes anything from Ratners look like the crown jewels? Truly awful people. When you meet one of these sorts they will tell you during the course of time spent with them that they are a High Priest / Priestess, and they will say it as many times as their stupid mouths will allow. No, I haven't got time for 'em.

"Satanists don't practice Witchcraft and neither do Witches practice Satanism. The two are as completely unrelated as taxidermy and radio presenting.

"I've never come across a 'dangerous cult' in twenty years. What is a 'dangerous cult' anyway? One that isn't Christian, I suspect. I see he doesn't mind teenagers dabbling with the occult though! Can I have the statistics regarding 'often'? I strongly suspect that he's making it all up as he goes along, gleaning erroneous notions from tv and the media in general. A risk of what anyway? Looks like scare tactics to me from somebody who doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.

"I think personally that Christmas is much more of an occult festival when you consider 'occult' only means hidden, and what is more hidden than the true Spirit of Christmas, peace and goodwill to all men?

"Andy is just ill informed, as you yourselves are by saying Halloween is a celebration of evil. Complete nonsense."

Duane - an Occultist

What do you think? Is Andy being a kill-joy or should we recognise Halloween as a celebration of evil? Or should we all take Duane's view? Have your say by filling in the form.

What you have just written is nonsense, as if you had read it correctly, you would see that he didnt say that satan wasnt related to witchcraft. He said Withes do not practice satanism, and Satanists are not Witches. You should read what he has written properly before commenting.

Alexis
yes it is meant to be fun, children have great delight in dressing up and asking for candy you just have to make sure youre safe!

nancy
ok. satan is known as the devil. and people know that hes the one that brought sin into the world. so how can you say that satan isnt related to witchcraft. thats nonsense.
