If you like relics, ruins and all things old then North Yorkshire's
the place for you.
Have a good look at York Minster,
the biggest Gothic cathedral in Europe. Marvel at it from the outside,
visit the crypt, or climb the Central Tower for a stunning view
of the city more
Drop into St Mary's church at the top of Whitby's
199 steps. The church has a Norman tower and an 18th century interior.
The maritime style interior was the work
of local shipwrights who fitted the church. It has small cabin-like
box pews, galleries above, and a three storey pulpit
Visit Whitby Abbey. Its history dates back to AD
675 when St Hilda founded a monastery there. The present structure
dates from 1078 and is now in the care of English Heritage. Coastal
erosion is an ongoing problem on the east coast, and it's incredible
to think that not so long ago Whitby Abbey was several miles from
the coast!

Minster |
York Minster as we see it today was built between the 12th
and the 15th centuries, and the present building is perhaps
the fifth or sixth to stand on that site.
The Minster was damaged by fire in 1984 when
the cathedral was struck by lightning.
