York Maze on the outskirts of the city is cut each year from a
vast field of maize! And this year the maze's newest attraction
includes giant talking wooden sculptures. Intrigued? Read on...
The giant maze of maize is planted each May. At almost 30 acres,
York Maze is the largest in the world and 1.5 million plants are
used to make York Maze.
The design for the pathways is cut each June and because maize
plants grow up to three metres tall in less than 10 weeks, the maize
is tall enough to get lost in by July, and it opens to the public.
Finally the crop is harvested in September to feed the cows, before
the cycle begins all over again in May.

on show at York Maze this summer |
When wandering through the maze, visitors read clues which help
them navigate their way around. This year the clues are in the form
of giant talking sculptures, rather than in the more traditional
form of wooden signs. "As visitors approach the unusual and
quirky sculptures, they 'come alive' and give them the next clue.
It will be great fun trying to track down the next sculpture to
get the clue," says maze master Tom Pearcy.

Mick Burns is the chainsaw sculptor responsible for these intricate
scultpures. He learned to use a chainsaw 28 years ago as part of
his job in forestry and tree surgery, but for the past eight years
he has been earning a living as an instructor and chainsaw sculptor.
Mick uses the chainsaw from start to finish on the sculpture, often
producing what amounts to a detailed sketch in wood. The only other
tool used is a power sander.
