Richmondshire
Arts and Crafts Guild starts its inaugural show at the Dales Countryside
Museum on 6th August 2004.
The
show, featuring the work of local artists is sure to draw crowds.
But
not as many as Bainbridge village green, where Barbara Gardner's
rejected nudes will be on view.
Barbara
sent three large oil paintings to the Guild for inclusion in the
show, more than three weeks ago.
One
of her oil paintings, 'Weighing Up', (see top of page) was used
in the Guilds publicity material for the show.
So
it came as a real surprise to Barbara when the nudes were sent back.
"I
was told on the day of hanging for the exhibition, Thursday 5th,
that they 'are not up to
standard'.
I've
resubmitted work more to the hanging committee's subjective liking,
which has been accepted,
"But
I intend to show the three 'unacceptable' nudes on my garden wall,
facing the village green of Bainbridge over this weekend.
"This
is so that members of the public can make a judgement ... weather
permitting!
The
paintings will be accompanied by a printed message, saying:
|
'Rejected
as not up to standard, by the Richmondshire Arts & Crafts
Guild on the day of hanging. Go and see the show at the Countryside
Museum at Hawes and judge for yourself.'
|
It
seems strange that a work considered 'not up to standard' was used
as publicity for the show. Perhaps there was an underlying reason
for the rejection ... are Barbara's nudes too naughty for 'nice'
Richmondshire?

Barbara's doing the right thing! Sounds to me like a stupid Guild anyway. Start your own Guild Barbs! only for nude painters of course..
