'Lastingham Wood,' by Jim Wright

Artist: Jim Wright

Jim Wright was born in Scotland, but he and his family moved to Perth, Western Australia in the late sixties. Now based in Kirbymoorside, Jim has become well known for his portrayal of the surrounding landscapes and seascapes.

Jim says, "I paint landscapes and seascapes of the more remote areas of the moors, mountains and coastline of Northern Britain. Being witness to, or experiencing the powerful forces of nature, is important in my work. I strive to capture the atmosphere and the sense of place in my work.

"The quality of the light is the element that inspires me time and again.  I find that more often than not, I paint into the light source, this catches the brilliance of the light as it reflected off the land, and the diffusion of light through the atmosphere. The land often appears to be disseminated into layers, which helps to provide a greater depth to the landscape.

"The sea is also the subject of many of my paintings. My parents emigrated to Australia in the 1960’s, and as a youth, I spent a good deal of time surfing in Western Australia. I still enjoy surfing when the conditions are good at Scarborough or Saltburn, although this is often in the winter months when the easterlies blow.

"My semi abstract paintings of waves reflect this love of the sea, I try to capture the movement, form and explosive power of the water, applying layer after layer of paint, until I feel instinctively that the painting has caught this energy."

From an early age, Jim showed a natural talent for art and music, and chose to follow a career in art, training at the Perth College of Art and Design.
