NY artist: Philip Wilson
Inspired by the old world of Knaresborough and the new world of New York, Phil's paintings are bold and colourful. Find out more about Phil and take a look at his paintings in our online gallery...
After gaining a BA (Hons) Illustration in 1997 I trained to be a teacher and taught art and design at a comprehensive school before eventually moving to industry and I'm currently working in advertising as a creative studio manager.

I have recently returned to my passion of painting and spend my spare time experimenting with a range of styles and subject matter. The inspiration for my work comes from a wide variety of sources including townscapes, landscapes and figurative as well as looking at how artists past and present have interpreted what they feel and see onto canvas.
I spend a lot of my time taking photos as I find inspiration in so many areas, sometimes the problem is knowing where to start.
Creating 'good art' involves an understanding of tone, balance, composition, and colour harmony. Combining all these areas can be quite a challenge. When creating a piece of art I often feel like I'm putting together the pieces of a jigsaw.

I regularly work in mixed media and use various mark making tools, however I believe that simplicity is key to creating great art, so I look for shapes/colours and composition that I feel engage the viewer in a dialogue with the work.
I have work on show at Art in the Mill, Knaresborough and the Framing Centre Gallery, Harrogate. Also I have two summer exhibitions at the Pavilions, Valley Gardens, Harrogate on Bank Holiday weekends 25th & 26th May 2008 & August 24th & 25th 2008.
