Manfat Voodoo in BBC Radio York

Manfat Voodoo

Branded as both brilliant and a complete pile of something unmentionable, it's a love or hate affair with this band from Scarborough. But judge for yourself - listen to their live session for Matt Seymour Introducing... on 28th June 2007.

Ask people in the know what they think of Manfat Voodoo, and they'll either pour on the platitudes or huge helpings of derision. Rather like a certain yeast based spread, you either love 'em... or hate 'em.

Manfat Voodoo have been called surrealist. And depending on how you look at it, their lyrics are either brilliant or weird. Personally I'd tend towards a bit of both. It isn't everyone who can write a song around the text on a train ticket, and make it work. And for the most part it does work. Unusual similies and little references that make you sit up and think 'did they really just say that?'.

It's all backed up by some excellent musical ability. This band have been together for quite some time, and it shows. Each song had a refreshing dynamic range, with light and shade throughout helping to keep your attention.

With influences ranging from Captain Beefheart to Marty Robbins, it's hard to know quite where Manfat Voodoo sit in the musical spectrum. Perhaps they really are unclassifiable...

Why not take a listen to their excellent live session tracks and make up your own mind.
