When Amber met David

Nine year old Amber Coulson entered a competition on BBC Radio York to win a David Beckham Football Academy kit...little did she know that entering the competition would lead to a meeting with the man himself.

One sunny day last year, nine year old Amber Coulson's Dad entered a competition on BBC Radio York.

Adam Tomlinson had a fantastic prize to give away which had every parent of a football crazy youngster in North Yorkshire jamming up the phone lines.

The lucky winner would become the proud owner of a David Beckham Football Academy kit, complete with shorts, shirt, trainers, tracksuit and much more.

Stuart Coulson from York was drawn out of the hat and he wanted the prize for his nine year old daughter Amber. But, unbeknownst to both Adam Tomlinson and Amber, all the winners of the national competition were entered into a draw and three lucky winners would get an all expenses paid trip to Madrid to meet none other than David Beckham and receive their prize from him in person!

Imagine Amber's reaction when she discovered she was one of those three winners.

Who better to tell us all about it than Amber herself...

It all started when my Dad entered a phone in competition on Radio York. You had to name a song by listening to the words, and he knew it was Ticket to Ride by The Beatles. He called in and won the competition but he didn't realise that he'd have to sing the song on live radio! Anyway we're both glad that he did now!

The prize was a David Beckham Academy (DBA) kitbag with football kit, boots, tracksuit and sports capsules. He phoned Zara at Rose Reid Media who organised the prizes and arranged for the prizes to be delivered in my size.

A couple of days after, Zara called him and asked if I could come out of school for a day. He said maybe, but why? That's when she told him they wanted to fly me to Madrid to meet DAVID BECKHAM!!! I went wild when I found out, and my school St Aelred's in York were happy for me to go to meet a superstar.

We went down to Heathrow on Tuesday 12th June and stayed in a nice hotel overnight because we had to be at the airport at 6.30 to check in on Wednesday morning. We didn't have to pay for anything.

Lucky girl!

I met Zara and the two other prize winners, Natalie from the Midlands and Billy from the South East at the airport. We all flew to Spain in comfy leather seats and our cars met us at the airport to take us to a film studio. We had to wait a while, but got our new football kits to try on.

Eventually Natalie, Billy and me were taken to another studio to meet David. The grown ups had to stay outside HA HA HA !!! When there was a break in his filming, we went through to see David. I was very nervous, but he was really really nice and friendly and chatted to us.

I asked him when the spice girls were reforming and he laughed and said he wasn't allowed to tell me. Me and Natalie asked if we could see his six pack and he let us.

We then did some publicity photos which are really cool. David signed my new DBA football shirt and he also signed my Dad's 1999 Man United European Cup Final shirt, which was my Dad's best bit of the day. He was really friendly with us and we stayed for about half an hour.

The best bit for me was when he gave me a kiss on the cheek, and I'm not washing it off, ever. When we'd left the studio (and she'd finally calmed down a bit - Dad!) we were taken to the Bernabeu stadium for a tour. It's massive and we took lots of photos.

It's really weird because Real Madrid won the league there only a couple of days after we'd been sat on the bench and in the players' changing rooms.  After a long day we flew home, and me and Dad arrived back in London very late. We stayed another night in a hotel because it was too late too drive home.

That is the story of the best day of my life!
