Jess Morgan

Jess Morgan

Jess Morgan picked up a guitar and started writing songs when she arrived at uni in York just a couple of years ago. But you wouldn't guess that she was a relative newbe to this composition lark, as she turns out fantastic tunes.

Jess Morgan is a natural talent. Writing songs that are individual, catchy and unashamedly pop, she's wowed more experienced singers with her seemingly effortless performances.

Almost certain (well nothing's guaranteed is it) to be a star of the future, Jess joined Matt Seymour for a live session on BBC Radio York. You can hear the three tunes she played right here.

How do you think you've developed as a song writer during your time in York?

"I suppose the most obvious thing is confidence. Especially in a city like York where people take you under their wing and give you support slots. You get your music out there and people say you were good, when you thought you were rubbish.

"I've really enjoyed that, and I think having more confidence has made me pick up my guitar lots more and the songs are just coming to me."

How important is it to get out and gig your material?

"It's great because if I've got an idea for a song, I can put it together, I can play it and usually someone will notice. If there's about 100 people there, and one comes up and says 'I like that song' it gives me such a boost. It helps me hone my style a bit. I've accepted that what I'm doing is pop and with that in mind I'm going out there and writing what I do best."

Do you find that some people label you as folk because it's just you and a guitar?

"I don't really know how all the genres work. We did decide on a label a while back, kind of a New Brit Pop Folk thing. There are labels that get thrown around but everyone's developing in their own way so you're going to go in out and of different styles."

So why don't you play with other musicians

"I just like going out and being myself. With bands it takes forever to clear up after a gig. It's so much more sweaty with a band. I like being on my own, so I can put my guitar in its case and go home.

"When I've got words and music by Jess Morgan I like it to be just me. I think that's where I'm probably a bit pretentious. I am limited in my abilities but I want it to be from me, without anyone else tinkering about with it.

What's next for you now you've finished your degree?

"I've got to leave York at the end of June. I'm going to London and starting an access to music course. It's the same course that James Morrison was on, so hopefully that could lead to something big."
