Post your thoughts here. Twenty years after a young Neil Warnock celebrated promotion into the football league Scarborough FC's 128 years of history draws to a close. With debts of around £2.5m The High Court in Leeds ruled the club must be wound up. Some would say the club's problems started with Jimmy Glass's 95th minute winner at the end of the 1999 season, which kept Carlisle United up - and sent Scarborough back into Non-League football.

Debts mounted, interest mounted and the club had to form a plan to get out of trouble. Scarborough FC owned their stadium, and the land was valuable, so a plan was formed to sell the ground and move. Scarborough's ground, The McCain Stadium is worth only £500,000 as a sports facility but around £3m as a housing development. But things are rarely that simple. A restrictive covenant on the use of the land meant it couldn't be used for development. The plan was to get the Council to lift this restriction and allow the club to move to Eastfield. The creditors were quite happy with the club to carry on - thinking the ground sale would then cover their debts. But things didn't progress as quickly as the creditors hoped. Not ready to give up yet, the club managed to stave off the first attempt to wind them up in court. They were given eight days to put in a sworn affadavit to the judge, to prove the move to the new stadium was all-but-done. However on the 20th June Scarborough Borough Council said they didn't have enough information to proceed with the lifting of the covenant and the judge carried through the winding up order. There are already plans to form a new club, under the name AFC Scarborough or Scarborough Athletic, but that's the next hurdle to overcome. Both the club's chairman and the supporters trust have applied to the Northern Counties East League. And just like the Highlander... There can be only one.
