Scarborough's McCain Stadium

Seadogs go out of business

The future of Scarborough FC has been looking grim for some time and now, after several reprieves, The High Court in Leeds has ruled the club must be wound up. Post your thoughts here.

Twenty years after a young Neil Warnock celebrated promotion into the football league Scarborough FC's 128 years of history draws to a close. With debts of around £2.5m The High Court in Leeds ruled the club must be wound up.

Some would say the club's problems started with Jimmy Glass's 95th minute winner at the end of the 1999 season, which kept Carlisle United up - and sent Scarborough back into Non-League football.

The club spent more than it could afford to try and regain league status, which they never did. Debts mounted, interest mounted and the club had to form a plan to get out of trouble. Scarborough FC owned their stadium, and the land was valuable, so a plan was formed to sell the ground and move.

Scarborough's ground, The McCain Stadium is worth only £500,000 as a sports facility but around £3m as a housing development. But things are rarely that simple. A restrictive covenant on the use of the land meant it couldn't be used for development.

The plan was to get the Council to lift this restriction and allow the club to move to Eastfield. The creditors were quite happy with the club to carry on - thinking the ground sale would then cover their debts.

But things didn't progress as quickly as the creditors hoped.

Not ready to give up yet, the club managed to stave off the first attempt to wind them up in court. They were given eight days to put in a sworn affadavit to the judge, to prove the move to the new stadium was all-but-done.

However on the 20th June Scarborough Borough Council said they didn't have enough information to proceed with the lifting of the covenant and the judge carried through the winding up order.

There are already plans to form a new club, under the name AFC Scarborough or Scarborough Athletic, but that's the next hurdle to overcome. Both the club's chairman and the supporters trust have applied to the Northern Counties East League. And just like the Highlander... There can be only one.

I was saddened to hear the total demise of scarboro fc.having once lived in scarboro, running a hotel,I find it unbelievible that the towns folk and council allowed a lovely little club to die,the empthasis on die.having watched the sea dogs for many years in the mc cain staduim, on freezing cold saturdays and bitter midweek games(that is what real football is about)my interest in football has all but been killed off.I hope that the new team if allowed can resurface and climb back to a level of respect they deserve. come on the old seadogs keep swimming, yours faithfully lee.now resident in Germany but life long scarboro fan

As a life long L.F.C fan growing up in Scarborough from the age of 3 I always followed Scarborough FC and even was there to celebrate thier success to the football league (the first team to do so automatically)(I have been living in Stevenage since 1988.) so I wish them all the best for for the future & hope that they will make a good team again.

So Boro are back. OK a different name but still the same beating heart! There has been discusison about why the big clubs didn't help out. Answer - why should they? The Premiership in particular but also the Championship is corporate football. They have a profit to make and if that's at your expense why should they care? Indeed legally speaking for those clubs listed on the Stock Exchange the directors duty is primarily for the share-holder, not small clubs.So...what does that mean for clubs like Boro? It means you have to live within your means. It means if you don't have the cash don't spend it. If someone says we'll give you £5000 in a month...wait for the money first. It means above all getting back to the grass roots of your local community and building a club on rock solid foundations. The comments on this board do show that fans of other tems care deeply when another team is in danger of collapsing. I think we all see (and dread) Saturday afternoons without our much needed fix of footy from the clubs we love.Well done all concerned at Scarborough Athletic, good luck except when you play the mighty Altrincham FC.

Even though I do ot support the seadogs, I find it hard to fathom out why the council did not do more to help save the club. After all they did help bring money into the town. Where is that extra money going to come from now?

ex-scarborian
It's a shame the council couldn't fast track lifting the covenant to save the club. When there is so much talk of regeneration and improvement, they seem to keep shooting themselves in the foot.

Steve Lee
Good luck Seadogs in your efforts to relaunch.I can't comment on the business management of Boro but i can't help thinking that Sky TV and the financial greed it has helped to unleash will have played it's part in pricing small clubs out of business.

Steve Fridlington - YCFC
IT STINKS!!!! The FA sit there and watch the rich getting richer. How can they justify not doing more to help out the smaller clubs? I have serious issues with this - not least because half of our songs are now out of date and surplus to requirements!Stinks,Bye bye scarboro!

ray
ive watched scarborough since i was a little lad my uncle took me to every home game since twenty years ago i blame it one the boro council all i can say is it must not want football in the town they would rather spend money on other things what they are good at rip boro never forgoten

peter
get the new club going

mark
what can you say i am gutted. we all knew it might happen but kind of thought somehow it wouldnt. and now it looks like the mccain stadium will be sold off and that covenent lifted to pay off the debts. well thats a shocker aint it. so now there will be no senior football in the borough for some time fantastic. i cant believe how badly things have gone. funny cos the chairman never once let on how bad things had got. message to york and harrogate fans get fans on the board its our club dont let it get run like ours was. dont be kept in the dark!!!! fingers crossed there might be a north yorkshire derby again.

Tony, Scarborough
In response to David Bates post referring to the covenant imposed on the ground . Just watch this space David; i bet it's not going to take long for the covenant to be lifted now the club has been consigned to the annals of history. There are a number of very questionable thoughts that cross my mind and the final council decision to delay until a full meeting in July will, I think, reveal the truth. Maybe not immediately but in time we shall all witness the reasons why. I don't ever wish to be negative on any issue but the final outcome will be extremely interesting indeed. The fat lady that has been the subject of a number of threads on the Seadogs Forum will ultimately have to sing.

chris
Like most people who have commented I'm really sorry to see the demise of the club. As someone has previously commented the ground was fit to burst when the Big Boys came, the likes of Chelsea and Man U. Am I the only one who thinks that the top players and Premier clubs owe something to the little clubs who scrimp and save to keep football local and bring on young talent? Why doesn't each premier and league one team 'sponsor' or actively support a lower league team. This might simply involve setting up a fixture between them and the small club. This can be one way of upping the gate returns and getting exra money into the smaller club's coffers. If the grass roots die...then so does everything else!

Samantha
I am born and bred in Scarborough and proud of it. I have always had a season ticket and stuck by them through thick and thin. Which is more lows than highs! When we played Chelsea the crowd was busrting at the seams and tickets were like gold dust!! Where were all the so called fans when the Seadogs needed all our help not at the Macain Stadium thats for sure, the people of Scarborough did very little to help the club!!!

David Bates Leeds
51 years boy and man I supported my club through the good and bad times. I am absolutely crestfallen that this has been allowed to happen. OK it is not a time for apportioning blame...but surely the same sticking point exists (that covenant) how can the sale of the ground go ahead if Scarborough Council, who reneged on a decision back in January to lift the covenant. They will have to lift it to sell the ground and clear the debts, so why could the judge not see the logic of that situation? I hope that any "new club " can rise from the ashes and quickly progress through the leagues to where we belong....... to think 3 years 4 months ago we were getting knocked out of the 4th round of the cup by Chelsea...and now there is nothing to look forward to on a Saturday in the season. My mum's cousin the late Geoff Bowman will be turning in his grave...All the heroes of the past will be shedding a tear at the miserable end to the club.....Up the Boro.....

Mike Smit
THis is a sad day for Scarborough and for football. It is wrong that so much money is tied up in a few clubs; with so little coming down to the grass roots. Football needs teams like Scarborough FC. We all hope that you will be back soon.Barnet supporter living in Yorkshire.

Billi
I think that Scarborough deseve what as happened to them and its there own fault for spending so much money! if they were to reform undear a new name they would have no ground to play at the only sad thing to come out of all of this is that all the players have lost jobs and money which they dont deserve its the clubs fault not the players !!

Gopher [Leeds fan ]
Saddened to hear this when the premiership managers throw millions around for so called super stars who moan about playing twice a week. Won`t be the first club to go like this this year.

JOHN nuneaton
come on scarborough council lift the covernt, Bet you were proud when the boro were in the football league. So lift this weight hanging round their necks and give the boro a new ground support your team now!!!!!

Fabio - italy
come on boro! i hope scarborough will be more lucky in the future.

David , Leeds
Through my whole life Boro have never been to these depths in non league football, but there is only one way to go ...that is back up next season. I will keep an eye on progress from my intended new home in Spain..the internet is wonderful.......shame I will not be able to listen on line, at least I do not thnk that will be able to .

jake hobson
hya i am frm boro myself and went 2 da lst home gamne of the season were we drew 1-1, da game was gr8, crowd wernt as big as expected but still a gd turnout. the only bad point was the referee bein biased and relates to us not havin as much luck dis season in many areas. the thing that bugs me is dat we did a survey askin wether if u had the time, wud u go n watch boro? 50,000 anwsered and 75% of them sed they wud go 2 a game. but on the day. abwt a 1,000 come along. the questions is, where are the rest? next season the fans need to fully back us all the way wateva the results. neva mind wether we r not the best but still we want a team! anyway gd luck 2 boro in da new season n hopefully da dwns will be changin to ups! cya

jack @boro
we could have stayed up if it wasn't for the ref against leigh!but he wasn't the worst ref we have had this season.at least we have a club to support in august

JORDAN GLADWIN/SHEFF WEDS FAN..
COME ON YOUR SCARBOROUGH BOYS PIC UP ON THE POINTS LOK WHERE YOU WAS A FEW YEARS AGO THAT WAS THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE LOOK NOW YOUR IN THE CONFERENCE NORTH GOING SOUTH ITS NOT GOOD PEOPLE SPEND GOOD MONEY ON TICKETS TO WATCH YOU PLAY AND THERE NOT SEING WHAT THEY WANT WICH IS WINNING AND YOUR NOT DOING THAT ARE YOU STAY UP FOR THE FANS WHILE YOU HAVE GOT SOME.

David, Leeds
It is a shame that 6 points might not be enough to stay in Conference North, but at least the club will survive...I hope (fat lady singing and all that)

Andy, Nottingham
I am so pleased that it appears something has been sorted and the club can finally close this chapter of its life and move forward and upwards

BoroAlways
total crap

rico
i remain sceptical until i see some of scobbie's grand plans

peter
good one bora lets pack the ground on saturary

Tony,Scarborough
A massive thank you to the Chairman,Mr. Scobbie and other officials involved in hopefully putting the finishing touches to a deal which will secure the future of the club. Should all be successful this is a springboard from which the club can rebuild so as to go on to better things on a financial footing, the likes of which have not been seen for a few years. The latest development will be viewed with a huge sense of relief and thanks for the tireless efforts afforded by Mr. Scobbie and officials. We must also not overlook the similar dedication of Mr.Patterson and all the lads for their determination and achievement throughout virtually the whole of this season where relegation, a 10 point deduction, and an embargo on signings have left a much depleted number of players from which the word "choice" has been non-existent. That only a few injuries have resulted from all of this is surely a credit to their resilience and commitment.Thank you once again for going flat out so as to ensure that 128 years is not the end.

YeadonYorkie
Even though there is big rivalry between York and 'Boro it is so sad to see this happening to them. Surely someone can rescue them, also someone needs to be held accountable we need to know where all the money has gone

Craig
Although i moved to London about 10 years ago i still follow Scarborough as closely as i can, and it saddens me that one of the oldest clubs may have to become one of the newest clubs, let's just hope that something can be done....CHIN UP guys!!!!

Tony, Scarborough
Presumably a Debenture was given by the Football club to the H.S.B.C. in return for the borrowings. Were guarantees ever taken from any of the Directors of the club and,if so, have they been called upon to pay up? Are there hidden assets owned by any of the former "guarantors" if guarantees were involved or is the situation vis a vis these people as hopeless as it is with the financial legacies of the club.I somehow can't imagine that anything has been overlooked but it was just a thought as I hadn't seen any mention of personal assets being involved. Apologies if the poits have already been covered.

justin a thort
I'd like to see the company accounts for the last 20 years, bet it would be like reading "noddy mysteriously get's rich"

Tony, Scarborough
In response to the suggestion to pledge £10 per person and raise £1/2 million, what about selling pieces of the current turf to raise cash. Would a square metre or so of the McStad be of sufficient interest to sufficient people?

Tony,Scarborough.
I appreciate there has to be a deadline as regards the C.V.A., but it appears to be so near that surely another short extension could be agreed until the ground sale is finally signed over. I know it's been going on for a very long time, but isn't the end of the season the right time to say yes or no after 128 years through thick and thin. It seems a terrible insult and total disregard for all supporters past and present The irony of it all is that the present directors have to pick up the legacies of previous gaffs made by persons no loger on hand to accept responsibility. I can't understand why it was said that it's too late to do anything about it in the S.E.N., even if a benefactor could be found. Could somebody kindly enlighten me on this point please. Thankyou.

seadog
help!

Dagenham (Doncaster now!) Miller
Tragic news. Absolutely devestating. I really hope something is sorted. Scarborough are one of the worlds oldest teams - let alone the UK. Someone surely must step in and do something.Save the Boro'

David Bates
It cannot be allowed to happen...from the 1st match I ever saw at 3 years old , through another 51 years of ups and downs, emotional rollercoasters etc..Scarborough FC cannot be allowed to close just like that. Surely the builders etc can come up trumps and save the day...The new stadium can be called the Persimmon Stadium for all I care....I will be devastated if the worst happens....If Ian Scobbie pulss this one off he will be a hero forever more...

Andy, Nottingham
I have supported and followed Boro for 40 years through thick and thin I really hope there is a way out of this mess Please please get it sorted and keep us in business. if we go under I with 100s of other fans will be Gutted the support at Moor Green on Monday was fantastic.

NO-BATTLE-NO-VICTORY

Regardless of what we, as rival football supporters, think of each others clubs (York and Boro')I feel very sad for the the players, but they can get other clubs, however,I feel most for all the fans who have supported them through thick and thin. I can only say that if a group comes up with any rescue plan I would certainly support them just to keep Scarborough FC alive!

Rawdonseadog
Another stupid decision about the CVA, more bad news for the Boro, it will be one of the darkest days if Boro get booted out of football. Where are all these Premier league clubs they shud be helping teams like ourselves out they will hardly miss 2 million especially the likes of the big 4. Money needs to be disruputed alot better in football or more and more low league clubs will be shut down keep the faith!!!!

PETER
SAVE THE BORA

keyfee
Time to call it a day with the present "management".Start lower down the system with the Supporters Trust.

Craig Harte
I love Scarborough as a town and this is all wrong.I dont know how its got so bad.I just hope its sorted.Good luck 2 all the Boro fans and everyone at the club.

chris tilley
if the sale of the ground has been agreed why are the ceditors doing this? they would be paid in full in a few months instead of possibly getting a few pence in the pound in a few weeks!

Mark
Someone somewhere is accountable for the mess that is scarborough football club. When geoffrey richmond was in charge we were never in debt what has happened. We need a miracle now more than ever!!!!!!

bboy
gutted, there must be a way out of this.

A shame to see ANY team go under. I'm sure they'll be a Scarborough team of some sort to support. not sure what league though. Hopefully you'll do an AFC Telford. Good luck

As an ex Court Clerk, I had the pleasure of seeing tens of thousands of UK children taken from loving middle class and working class parents, so good where these lawyers and judges at taking children from parents, mostly by creating endless false documents of no relevance, which no public member could ever understand, well, I think this... SFC need a family lawyer, because if they can take children from parents with consent of the Courts like butter on a hot knife, they can hold off SFC'S creditors. The family lawyers also have enough money earned from taking North Yorkshire children, well I imagine they can afford to buy the best players in the world.Jane PlunketYork

will be asad day if they do go to the wall maybe it's time for some of the sky money payed to the big clubs to trickle down to the lower leagues all the best some true fans and not corperate 'investors' hope you guys pull through and the folk in your town all pull together

jack@boro
reynolds and scobbie need to tell the town where the money from the chelsea game went.if we do get wound up where will the other 2 million go ?(2million to pay off debts)

steve smith
i belive scobie will come up trumps in the end he wont let us down.dont give up on scobie we need him more than ever, steve smith

Paul Mayman
Devestated! I live in Southampton, until two seasons ago i rarely missed a game. I fear Worksop at home is going to be the last game Scarborough FC game i will see, to make matters worse iam on holiday for the last few games. I will not even get the chance to say goodbye to the team i love. The Boro fans have allways been a credit to the town and i will dearly miss standing on the terraces with you all watching the Boro.

Brian
I really hope that something can be sorted out.I am a life long York city supporter and I know we have a bit of rivalary but It saddens me to here of this happening to any football club.all I can say is best of luck to all at ScarboroughBrian From Malton.

karl bardsley
We have been mugged. Lets keep the ground change the name of our team and start in the unibond next season.

brian
does this mean the the 100s of small companies in scarborough will get some of there money back or is this yet another ploy to keep the gravy train going. i await the next 11th hour rescue
