Recycling

Want to be green?

We are all being encouraged to recycle. Local authorities are under pressure from the government to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and they in turn pass it onto us. Here's all the information you need on re-using and recycling...

Nearly all household waste can be taken to your nearest household waste recycling centre (HWRC). But if you can, it’s best for the environment to recycle or reuse. We’ve lots of information about recycling and reusing here, along with links to websites and organisations which can help.

To find your nearest HWRC visit the website for your local council.

Christmas cards

You can take your Christmas cards to WHSmith, Tesco, TKMaxx and M&S who are collecting in aid of the Woodland Trust until the end of January.

Supermarkets Sainsbury and Morrisons are also collecting Christmas cards for recycling.

Christmas trees

If you have a kerbside garden waste recycling service you can put your Christmas tree out to be collected. Make sure you chop it up into small pieces. If you don't have a kerbside recycling service then take it to your local HWRC. You'll find details on your local council's website.

Recycling

Take your magazines, newspapers, TV guides, envelopes etc to your nearest household waste recycling centre (HWRC). Bottles, jars, cans, cardboard and many other items can all be recycled at a household waste recycling centre. Or use your kerbside recycling collection if you have one.

Food waste

Food waste will be collected by your local council as part of the regular rubbish collection. Alternatively, you could compost your cooked food waste using special food waste digesters. York Rotters can give you help and advice with this.

Garden waste

If you want to compost your garden and uncooked vegetable waste at home, the City of York Council are offering reduced priced home compost bins, you can either ring the order hotline on 0845 077 0757 or visit the website.

If you can't or don't want to compost, then you can take your garden waste to your local HWRC or use your kerbside recycling scheme for garden waste if you have one.

Re-use

Remember if you are having a good clear out, please donate your good quality reusable items or unwanted gifts to your local charity and help a good cause.

Re-use is good for the environment too, reusing an item saves precious natural resources and creates opportunities for other people.

If you would like to donate good quality reusable household furniture or electrical appliances or are interested in purchasing reusable items yourself the following organisations will be able to help.

It's not only the donations that are important to charity shops and furniture re-use organisations, but the purchase of items from them. If you have never bought anything from a charity shop before, give it a try - you'll be impressed by the quality and diversity of items on offer.

Freecycle

Freecycle(R) is an internet-based, not for profit organisation dedicated to reducing landfill by "gifting" re-usable items rather than sending them to landfill. It is staffed entirely by volunteers, and membership is open to all, including businesses and other community groups as well as charities and suchlike.

In the UK there are 370 groups sharing 416,000 members and membership is growing rapidly. In North Yorkshire there are six groups: Harrogate, Ripon, Scarborough, Selby, Northallerton, Thirsk and Skipton & Craven, and one in York. Membership is free, and currently there are no other charges.

Freecycle(R) operates through the Yahoo! "groups" system, and it is usual for a member to create a Yahoo! identity, also free. This gives a certain amount of anonymity, and serves as a mailing point for messages.

Each group is run by a volunteer, called a moderator, whose task is to ensure everybody follows the few basics rules: keep it LEGAL, keep it FREE, and APPROPRIATE.

Rag and Bone

Rag-and-bone.co.uk has been especially developed to link householders with items they no longer need to others who can make good use of them. It offers a very economical alternative to throwing out large or bulky items that are still usable or repairable and enables others to benefit from them instead.

If you’ve got something to recycle or reuse which isn’t listed here, the best thing to do is contact your local council and they should be able to advise you.

Happy recycling!
