Artist: Barbara Asquith
Barbara works with materials as diverse as bronze, marble and slate to create 3 dimensional pieces which "convey emotions in their many guises". Take a look at her work in the online gallery, and see what the artist herself has to say about it.
From being a teenager I have always enjoyed the process of creation with designing and making my own clothes and later making party cakes in shapes such as champagne bottle roulette wheels and swimming pools.
I have a great interest in Victorian and Modern Art and Sculpture. I started creating small pieces as a hobby about 15 years ago. These pieces were liked by friends and family who then asked for me to create a piece for them thus my confidence in myself as a sculptress spiraled and I have worked hard creating ever since.
I hold ‘Open House’ exhibitions annually during FEVA (Festival of Entertainment and Visual Arts) and have also held a private sculpture exhibitions. I am also a founder member of ARToCo Company of Artists and have held joint exhibitions with the other members.
I also teach children during ‘Art Days’ at junior schools around Yorkshire. The children love these classes where they create their own first masterpieces.
This year has seen the unveiling of ‘Blind Jack’ Metcalfe in the centre of Knaresborough and it was the most important and interesting commission that I have undertaken. As well as getting a lot of satisfaction out of creating this full sized figure I also enjoyed the interaction with the public and helping with the fundraising
