Artist: Catherine Boyne-WhiteleggBy Catherine Boyne-Whitelegg Based in Copmanthorpe, but working on a variety of community based projects around the city as well as her own work, Catherine takes inspiration from those thoughtful moments brought about by tending the earth. After studying for a degree in ceramics I graduated in 2004 and set up my own pottery workshop. I'm based in Copmanthorpe, a village four miles from York and work in my own studio to produce ware, combining this with Community Art projects and part-time teaching. One major community project involved working with a variety of groups; children, adults with learning disabilities and teenagers, to produce 127 animal tiles, which were then incorporated with mosaics to form a fabulous bench at Tang Hall Community Centre. Help playing audio/video I've also set up a pottery workshop at Greenworks for nine adults with learning disabilities, and have worked on a number of projects for The Big Draw - exciting drawing, chalking and painting events at York Theatre Royal, The Early Music Centre & Askham Grange Open Prison.
My ceramics are both joyful and playful. I often draw my inspiration from when I work in my organic vegetable patch and reflect upon the idiosyncrasies of life. Decoration and form are brought together in my wheel throw and slab built work, producing bright, high-fired earthenware. I combine stains and slips in a block-print design to produce original pieces, each one unique. I also produce a range of matt stoneware glazes, where the clay may have been textured and print added to produce work based on nostalgic childhood memories.
