Pannal Ash U12s – Let the cup begin!

By Andy Whiteley
Gildersome Spurs 0 - 12 Pannal Ash

Garforth League U12 - Challenge Cup, 24th September 2006

Last year Pannal were very hopeful for the double of cup and league success. Where the league was successful the cup was not so good... A loss in the quarter finals was very disappointing to say the least.

"Pannal have the league to win back to back, the league challenge cup to win & especially this year to be the 1st Harrogate team to win the County cup"

So this year the management team has a real desire.  Pannal have the league to win back to back, the league challenge cup to win and especially this year to be the 1st Harrogate team to win the County cup.  What can we do…

Today saw an early away tie against div 3 opposition Gildersome Spurs in the 1st round of the Garforth League Challenge cup. After a week of Carling Cup upsets this was definitely the proverbial banana skin!!  What could Pannal muster up.

The weather was murky, the rain was lashing down and the Ryder Cup was on.  What more reason do we need to call a game off ?? However, no joy for the parents it was still on.  And what a star..  Gildersome were up for this. The centre was taken, a nice pass to the right side of Pannals defence and a corner. 12 seconds gone and the champions under the cosh. Nice corner good defensive header and another corner.  However , that was the last time Dom the keeper really saw the ball in anger.

Pannal just simply turned on the class. Reaney was awesome down the right, the midfield controlled everything and Finney was living the dream… Last year Finney scored 1 goal all season.  In this game he showed his twin brother (who really can score) where the net was. 5 mins gone, big brother (by 2 mins) wings in the corner and a quality Finney knee ripples the net. 1 – 0 and what a celebratory run. Out come his aircraft arms and a smile bigger than Montgomery’s on a good day. 1- 0.   And that was that.

When the ref blew for half time it was 8 – 0.  Pannal were just simply awesome.  Every time the ball went wide it seemed like a chance or a goal happened.  And boy, coupled with some brave goal keeping from the stand in keeper, Pannal missed some chances.

Still.  Finney’s knee, a couple from Pacey Peachey, a quality hat trick  from Emsley, 1 from  Fenn, from 2 inches this week, a Reaney beauty saw the boys go in 8 – 0 up at half time.  Sheer quality.

The 2nd half just continued where the 1st left off. Despite now playing up hill Pannal were superior in all departments.  Pacey Peachy completed his hat trick 1st,  and then up popped Finney twice for his hat trick. One goal all last season then three in a game!!!   Richardson nailed his debut goal with an absolute beauty, jinking right then left to fire into the roof of the net with his weaker foot and that was that.

Credit to Gildersome they carried on going up until the last minute but in the end they didn’t quite have the quality Pannal possessed. They will learn from this and come back a better team.

So Pannal march on to the next round and October promises to be a great month as Pannal Ash start to test their skills in cup competition against the best the county can offer.
