Music Features

Datyura

York band Datyura have been through a few different incarnations before settling on the current line up, but all along they've continued to bring us their unique funky tunes. And something that may well become known as the Haxby sound.

How long have you been going?

About three or four years now. We basically started playing in a garage ages ago... It seems so long ago and the band was so different back then. The line up has been as it is now for about seven months.

There's clearly a funk influence to your music, but do you have any songs that don't feature the word 'funk'?

Actually it's just that one song, but we do say it quite a lot.

What else influences the band?

The reason it works so well is that we've all got influences from all over the place. That's way our music doesn't sound like anything else. There's all sorts in there, everything from Michael Jackson to the Chili peppers.

If you had to pick one genre for your sound, what would it be?

Haxby. It's music for all... Us and Kid Ego.

It's not that there's much of a scene there, it's just that every band from Haxby seems to have a sound you can recognize.

How would you describe your gigs?

It's an insane night. You'll enjoy yourself. It's full of entertainment, full of energy and you will, no doubt, be talking about it for weeks.

You never know what you're going to get. It's something different every time. The songs will change, everything will change ever so slightly but it sounds good.

Where did the name come from?

It sounds a bit like a Japanese car, and it is a Japanese word but.... we'll leave it there.

Where can people buy your music?

We've got a new CD called Datyurology. It isn't finished right now, but when it's ready we'll let you know through our MySpace site.
