Q: Tell us a bit about your new album My Town
It was actually an experiment. I recorded it myself at home with a friend. I've got so many songs, we just picked them off the top of the pile. So it's just turned out as it's turned out really; and I'm quite happy with it. Q: Your album has quite a Nashville sound about it. Would you describe yourself as a country artist? I would, but there are hardened country fans out there who wouldn't. Q: When you say you're a country artist do you find people make certain assumptions about your sound? I did a gig last week and I asked the audience 'who in here thinks my music is country?' and everyone put their hands up. So I said, 'oh good, and who likes to listen to country?' and nobody put their hand up. But they really enjoyed it. Q: How do you decide which songs to keep and which to throw out? I don't know how many I've got but I've written songs before now where I've thought 'they're rubbish', and then I've played them to someone who says 'that's brilliant' why don't you play that song. I've quite often sung a song thinking that it won't go down very well, and then when I've played it it's had the best response so I keep it in the set. Then I kind of get used to playing it. There was one I wrote that's on the new album. It's called Pictures. I remember I was laying on my sofa with my guitar, just messing about. I started playing a tune and then I thought I'd write about these pictures on the wall. I never ever thought it would leave that room.
Q: Now you've recorded the album what do you hope to do next? Hopefully sell the album... I don't really know what I'm going to get out of this. I've worked really hard over the last year. I got myself on to the London showcase gigs and worked my way up to somebody putting me forward for the North by Northeast in Toronto. I'm just going along with it all at the moment because I really don't know where it might take me.
Q: How can people buy your music? Probably the best way to buy it is on cdbaby.com or you can contact me via my website. The CD is going on Amazon as well, so there's plenty of ways to get hold of it. |
