Gail in her studio
Artist: Gail Hurst
By Gail Hurst
After spending plenty of time as a teacher in Sheffield, Gail took up painting and hasn't looked back. She now has the time to devote to her painting and loves featuring the Yorkshire coast in her work.
Visiting Gail's studio
Gail's studio, 'The Shed in the Garden', is open Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays.
Parking is now available for 5 or 6 cars through the double gates opposite 1 The Bungalows, Port Mulgrave. (Turn right after the Telephone box).

I attended Derby College of Art & Design, then graduated from Sheffield School of Art and followed this with a post graduate course, before teaching in Sheffield. My work was included in the Art for Schools Project in Sheffield.
Following my early retirement from teaching I moved to the North Yorkshire coast and I've exhibited locally. I was very pleased to participate in York Open Studios events and return visitors will find I now have a studio in the garden.
My work generally focuses on the local environment: Port Mulgrave, the stunning Yorkshire coast, the Yorkshire moors and her garden. I'm inspired by the sometimes fleeting yet dramatic changes created by the elements, the stunning skies and endless changes in light and colour.
'Coast and Moor 003'
Working in a variety of materials but mainly in pastel or watercolour, I endeavour to catch a moment in time, sketching, taking photographs and often finishing my work out of doors. My work can range from impressionistic to abstract depending on the subject matter, my mood and response to it.
I am happy to provide a drink and demonstrate and discuss my work with visitors to 'The Shed in the Garden' - my studio!
