Whitby World Music Festival 2005

This autumn, Whitby will play host to some international music stars including Talvin Singh, Los De Abajo and Kate & Anna McGarrigle. The Whitby World Music Festival takes place on 21st - 23rd October 2005.

The picturesque fishing town of Whitby might not strike you as at the heart of cutting edge world music, but for one weekend in October, that's exactly what it becomes!

Now in its sixth year, the Whitby World Music Festival is organised by a not-for-profit organisation, Whitby Musicport. The three day festival consists of a concert programme at The Compass Club, a Fair Trade outlet at The Port Hole, and a workshop/education programme.

The festival runs from 21st until 23rd October 2005. For details on tickets, performance times and complete listings, go to the Whitby World Music Festival 2005 website (see link, top right).

The acts confirmed for this year's festival really do chart an incredible journey across the globe. From Bosnia-Herzegovina comes the Mostar Sevdah Reunion featuring Ljiljana Buttler, they're described as an amazing gypsy band born out of the Bosnian conflict.

Los De Abajo hail from Mexico, they will come to the festival having just released a major new album on Real World. From India is the vocalist Kaushiki Chakrabarty, who was a Radio 3 World Music Award Winner in 2005.

Big names also include Mercury Prize winner Talvin Singh, Ska legends The Beat and Canadian duo Kate & Anna McGarrigle.
