Another year running and a whole new bunch of bands, Soundwave takes to the stage yet again. The youth of Scarborough have organised a truly great event, not only for all the local talent to show what they can do, but for all the kids in Scarborough to get together and be creative.

After working hard, DIY Collective, a group of energised teenagers willing to make things happen, succeeded in putting on an excellent show, which people seemed to enjoy. During a fun-filled day I was interested to why this event was put together. Tom Watton, the organiser of Soundwave Festival explained it is for “the experience, the opportunity to perform and for others to enjoy”. My day at Soundwave was thoroughly enjoyable. There was a range of different bands, some tearing their hearts out for the fight in society, others there to promote their talent, and some just playing for the fun of it! I was impressed by the outdoor open mic stage, where brave young talent took to the stage with various forms of music, such as hip hop and prepared acoustic performances. One of the highlights of the day was Scarborough’s very own blues legend, Tom Townsend, who never fails to impress! Local talents Pheonix Down and Cardinal gave stunning performances, especially considering their young age. Talents to look out for in the future perhaps? As an aside to the music, workshops took place for all those interested. An all round beneficial event for everyone!

Exiting the music scene, Protocol put on an energetic performance as the night drew to a close, followed by the long awaited Catch-It-Kebabs jumping into the spotlight. A truly lively experience, and a perfect way to end the day. I really enjoyed their set, and judging by the people dancing behind me, I would guess they did too! Soundwave 2005 was a successful blast once again, and I’m positive everyone’s looking forward to the next one in 2006! Emma Robson |
