Sir Michael Parkinson - King of Chat

Gordon meets Parky

Sir Michael Parkinson, not unreasonably known as 'the King of Chat' after his long-running series of interviews with the great and good, was in Manchester to discuss his autobiography. We sent Gordon along to grill the master of the interview.

The first part of this terrifically wide-ranging interview sees the man known as 'Parky' reminisce about the early parts of his career which were spent in Manchester. He describes the steep learning curve of working on the newspaper then-known as the Manchester Guardian before moving onto TV with Granada despite his lack of knowledge of the subject.

In part two of the interview, Sir Michael and Gordon share their experiences as journalists in getting their subjects to open up. They talk about the meticulous mountains of research that must be conducted to find out every detail of who they'll be talking to.

Sir Michael also reveals his plan for an interviewee ejector seat for when the going gets tough. He probably wished he had one when Meg Ryan was sat across from him!

In the final part of the interview, Sir Michael dismisses any prospect of a return to the chat show circuit. He talks about how the changes in TV since he first appeared on our screens have affected his feelings for the medium.

And when reminded that the archives of his show are frequently plundered for obituaries of stars who were once his guest, Sir Michael reveals the one clip that he'd like to be remembered by.
