Superlambananas (c) Wild in Art

Superlambanana winners revealed

Six weeks ago we announced we were teaming up with the Arts Council of England North West to launch the Design a Superlambanana competition. Over a hundred schools rose to the challenge, with brilliant designs inspired by the culture of the region.

It gave our judges - North West Tonight's Ranvir Singh, Merseyside artists Amrit and Rabindra Singh and Sally-Ann Wilkinson from Wild In Art - a real headache; how to choose the design to be painted on to the replica Superlambanana and put alongside over a hundred others in the Go Superlambananas event next month.

Winning Superlambanana

The winner - from Wade Deacon High

The winner

In the end, the judges chose this remarkable design by pupils at Wade Deacon High School in Widnes:

"Our design was inspired by the attitudes of youth in today's society," they wrote, "the way children label each other as goths or chavs. We want to mix the different cultures together to show how society in the North West has grown over the years," they said.

And sure enough, half their Superlambanana is decorated in Chav style, the other half like a Goth or Emo. Like the Superlambanana itself, their design is a bit of a hybrid of teenage styles - you could say it's a teenage mutant Superlambanana.

The judges also picked a category winner from infant, junior and secondary age categories.

Winning infant Superlambanana

Jade's winning entry in the infants

Primary category

The judges were very impressed by the vibrant colours of this Blackpool Lights-inspired Superlambanana. It was a close thing between this and another entry but for several reasons, Blackpool triumphed.

It was felt that Blackpool is a town that represents the joy of youth and that this wonderfully creative entry symbolised such an icon of the North West perfectly.

It was created by Jade from St Peter's C of E Primary School in Bury.

Winning junior Superlambanana

Bartek's winning junior entry

Junior category

The junior category was won by this Worker-Bee Superlambanana.

It was designed by Bartek at Our Lady of Mount Carmel RC Primary School in Manchester and is inspired by the industrial culture of the region.

The judges felt that it was an inspired design that benefitted from a fantastic write-up. The Singh Twins loved the symbolism of the worker bee and loved how the design draws viewers in and makes them want to know more.

Winning secondary Superlambanana

Michael of Liverpool's secondary winner

Secondary category

Last, but by no means least, the secondary category winner was this colourful montage of Liverpool images created by Michael and David at St Francis Xavier College in Liverpool.

The judges thought that clever use of the sculpture's design, such as by using the Liver Birds' wings to 'hug' the city was clever, as was pulling in many elements of Liverpool without giving prominence to any one aspect.

You can see the winning design go in to the Go Superlambananas event in June.

BBC North West Tonight would like to thank all the schools who took part in our competition.
