Luftwaffe reconnaissance mission identifies Belfast targets

   
24 March 1941:
McDermott warns that Belfast might be vulnerable during full moon 7 - 16 April. No further measures implemented
 
   
 
7 April:
Squadron of German bombers raid Belfast
   
Warning siren sounds only after first bombs fall
 
   
 
Harland & Wolff fuselage factory destroyed.
Damaging blows to the docks

   
London, Liverpool, Bristol, Glasgow and Great Yarmouth attacked the same night
 
   
 
8 killed in Belfast: 6 in the destruction of an industrial building; 2 auxillary Fire Service men also perish
   
Luftwaffe crew return to base in Northern France and report Belfast's defences are, "inferior in quality, scanty and insufficient"
