The Great War - POW camp - The Barb Magazine

In House Production....from the POW`s!

Barb Magazine
The Magazine above was produced by British prisoners of war at Scheidnitz POW camp in Eastern Germany.
Its an amazing piece of work given the circumstances. The biting humour and attention to detail is first class. I`m not sure how, physically, the paper was printed but I imagine a good deal of German co-operation was necessary and given.

The publication advertises full theatrical productions, complete with stage, set and costumes. The evidence of which can be seen below.

lights, camera, action!

The editors credited with this issue are -

Flt. Lt. J. B. Daniel
Lt. B.B. Perry
Capt. J.B. Sterndale-Bennett
Lt. B. H. Clarke
Lt. L. L. Chapman

In the foreword the editors give the following warning :
"In the literary make-up of the issue, we have endeavoured to supply (to the laughter of the gods ), the more usual features of the modern magazine`s pages; using, as far as possible, the Gefangener environment. In the execution of this endeavour, we have departed from the shibboleth of the magazine writer, to some extent, in an attempt to be humerous at his expense. If the result be somewhat banal, pray, gentle reader, regard the circumstances as mitigating"

With over 40 pages, the magazine covers many topics :
Prose, short stories, humour , satire , fake adverts and all produced with detailed pencil and ink drawings.

My Grandfather was a prisoner at Scheidnidtz, after his ship the SS Floridian was torpedoed in the Irish Sea, only the Captain and he was picked up by the U-boat (U54) which sank them.

I have his POW photo album, which consists of many photos of the inmates in this camp, and other photos of the plays which the prisoners put on

Here is one of the letters: Click to read it...

My grandfather Arthur John DABSON, Royal Sussex Reg. was a POW at Scheidnidtz. I have a photo of him there in 1918.

I am trying to find a camp my grandfather was in near a place called Chemnitz in eastern Germany so I found this information very interesting.
