Loose Thread Quilters - The old Callan Bridge 1945

23. The Old Callan Bridge 1945 - Margaret McCrory

I am a great admirer of the works of John Luke. When I saw ‘The Old Callan Bridge 1945’ I felt that it would be an interesting painting to reproduce in fabric and was fortunate enough to be granted permission by the copyright holder. In working at this picture I grew more and more to appreciate John Luke’s wonderful sense of colour, of his attention to detail, of his use of proportion and the feeling of the painting being alive. It is a great way to study a work of art!

The bridge is still there, used by single lane traffic, and is now bordered by a housing estate on one side and by large trees hiding the view which John Luke recorded for us to enjoy. We are fortunate to have this historical painting of the rural scene as it was in 1945.

I used commercial and hand painted fabrics for bonded appliqué with free machine embroidery and machine quilting.

This painting is on display on the ground floor of the Museum.
