Brian's Newcastle and Kilkeel sketchbook (p.3)

Kilkeel means 'Church of the narrows ' which probably refers to the remains of a 14th century church in the town centre.

Kilkeel Boat Yard

Pencil sketch 1963

It was while futering about here that I discovered a long box rigged up to a water boiler and assumed the boat builders put planks into this box to steam them so they could be bent.

Is there any boat building carried out in Kilkeel now?

UPDATE

The fun of these your place and mine pages is that if you come across a new piece of information you can update your original page. That's what's happened here. For on reading about the boat builder Bill Quinn in a separate your place and mine article, I am almost certain this drawing of mine is of Bill's boatyard. The tallest of the two buildings on the left in this drawing you can also see in the first photo of Bill. It is the white building on the harbour wall behind him. And he even goes on to describe steaming the planks of wood in that box I mention. Small world.
