Back to the Rockface - 50 years later

 
 
 
Warm smiles and firm handshakes as old workmates meet up with each other for the first time in a great many years.
 
 
 
Willie Davey relates some personal history to BBC Newsline TV reporter Noreen Erskine
 
The tunnel, which was specially dried out for the occasion, lies waiting for its special visitors
 
 
Although ropes and harnesses were on offer, the veteran tunnellers found no difficulty in getting down the tall ladder unaided
 
Tom Newell, visibly delighted to be there, standing at the entrance in the same position as Sam McMurray did 50 years earlier as seen on our "Intro" page

 

 
The smooth concrete liner around the roof stops about 100ft in. Here we look back at the entrance from within the 'rough' tunnel..
 
As ready for hard work as they ever were... Thomas Rooney and William Hanna wishing they'd had these fancy modern helmets in 1950!
