My Michelin Man

By Michael Hayes (P6 St Mary's Primary School, Ballymena)

Drawing by Michael Hayes

I have chosen 'Michelin' because my dad has worked there for the last 18 years.
Michelin, Ballymena, produces tyres that are the same height as a man. My dad designs them. In the summer time we go to Michelin Fun Days - they have lots of competitions, like 'Fancy Dress' and they have races and a Disco - and I enjoy it!

Tyres are made from rubber, which is taken from trees, then shipped to Michelin. The rubber is prepared and chemicals are added, then the tyres are shaped, put into an oven and dried. Then the tyres are sold!

People buy Michelin tyres because they are good strong tyres, reliable, durable, easy to fit and not too expensive!

car

Some interesting facts include - Michelin have produced a tyre that lasted for 500,000 km it was an underground metro train tyre. Also, Michelin manufacture 3,600 tyres each day!!

Have you, like Michael, ever been to a Michelin Fun Day? Does working for Michelin tend to run in families? What other industries have been important to Ballymena?
