This week Joe and Suzanne jet off to the most easterly of the Canary Islands - Lanzarote, also known as the Island of the Volcanoes. On board with them is the Jackson family from Moira in County Down.
While the livelier resorts are mainly situated on the east coast of the island, the Jacksons are staying at the quiet, picturesque town of Playa Blanca on the south side. Originally a fishing village, this pretty little town has plenty of bars and restaurants, many situated around the colourful harbour.
Lanzarote may be only 60 km by 21 km in total, but it contains some truly spectacular landscapes and excellent beaches - some golden, some of fine, black volcanic sand.

Extra Info: If you want to explore the island you will find the bus service from Playa Blanca is fairly limited. There are plenty of organised excursions though or if you’re up for driving, you could hire a car. Expect to pay about £25 -£30 per day for a small car.
Lanzarote mapFlying time: Flight time from Belfast is 4 hrs 30 minutes. The transfer from Arrecife Airport to Playa Blanca is a mere 30 minutes.
Best time to visit: Lanzarote is on the same latitude as Florida and the Bahamas so it enjoys a dry mild climate all year round making it an ideal holiday destination, particularly in the winter months.
Currency: Euro
Time Difference: None
Language: Spanish
Tips: Buy at the resort rather than at the airport as Lanzarote like the rest of the Canary Islands enjoys a special duty free status which means that for things like cameras, perfume, alcohol, cigarettes – they’re much cheaper than the rest of the EU. For example digital camcorders are about 30 per cent cheaper than you would get them in the UK. Rayban sunglasses will be up to 30 per cent cheaper than they are back home.

Lanzarote is a volcanic island but don’t be put off by the thought of black sand. There are plenty of golden beaches to choose from.
