If
you fancy doing a spot of sunbathing on a beach in Crete be warned:
lying on the sand is forbidden and loungers are for hire only. In
Crete most parts of the beaches have been rented out by local businessmen
on a yearly basis so you’ve got to rent two sun loungers and
a parasol for the princely sum of €3-5.

This
is one of the main beaches in Hersonissos situated at the heart of
the tourist strip. And although it’s very popular it’s
not that picturesque and it is a shingle beach. Crete has no tide,
so it can get very crowded. |

If
you walk west away from the main tourist strip you’ll find smaller
sections of Hersonissos beach. The facilities are a bit limited it’s
really pretty and it’s not as congested.

Stalis
beach is a short taxi ride from Hersonissos and during the summer
months it’s absolutely jam packed. It’ll give you a change
of scenery and there are lots of amenities close at hand. It's also
good to know that there’s always a lifeguard on duty.

The
neighbouring resort of Malia is about 10 minutes from Hersonissos
either by bus or taxi. The sand here is soft and there is no shingle
and you have the novelty of being able to swim out to a small island.

If
your staying in a 5* Hotel you will probably have the use of your
own private beach where the sun-lounges are free of charge and it’s
a lot less crowded. |
