yellow left edge If you come to Amsterdam, you’re going spend a lot of your time in cafés. Either having a coffee, a drink, a bite to eat or just simply relaxing and just watching the world go by. Whatever the reason, it’s a great pastime and there are lots of options to choose from so here is Ulster Fly’s guide to Amsterdam’s café society.

Brown cafés are some of Amsterdam’s oldest dating back to around 1600. They’re so called because ithe ceilings and the walls have been stained with tobacco over the years. They’re quite charming, really nice, kind of like The Crown back in Belfast. Not only can you get coffee here, you can get alcohol, and just basically light snacks to accompany your beverage.

You can come here for just a drink or you can have a proper meal however it’s not got the atmosphere of a formal restaurant. It’s very much still, like a lovely relaxed café. And you can always have a few drinks at the bar after you’ve had your meal.

Tasting houses are bars that originally gave away free samples of it’s home brewed liquor’s. Ssadly, it's not free any more but it’s well worth coming along to try a geneva or gin, that are always served full to the brim and you have to drink them without lifting them from the table!
