About the Programme

Some of the fascinating stories and myths of Ulster are explained in an unpredictable way by young children in their own words. They perform drama reconstructions on subjects such as workhouses, Vikings, hedge schools and highwaymen.

Each programme includes both traditional and contemporary musical performances by primary and secondary schools. Eight original songs were written for the six part series.

The six programmes cover The Glens, The Bann, The Lakes, The Foyle, The Mournes and The Sperrins.

In the first programme, ‘The Glens’, viewers will learn about Oision’s Grave and the Dragon of Cargan. These tales are backed up with original songs ‘When Giants Roamed’ and ‘The Dragon’ performed by St Louis’ Primary School Choir, Ballymena.

In the 1800s, the Curfew Tower in Cushendall was guarded by Dan McBride who threw people in his jail for breaking the curfew. Children from St Ciarans P.S. play the parts in a drama reconstruction.

Triplets Charlie, Frank and Christy explain how they live closer to Scotland than any other kids on the island of Ireland. And Thomas from Cushendun tells viewers about people who used to live in caves.

Other musical performances include Cross & Passion College, Ballycastle with their version of the Coldplay classic ‘Fix You’ - Kintullagh Chorus, Ballymena with a version of Lanagan’s Ball accompanied by a Lambeg Drummer and Dalriada Barbershop Quartet with their rendition of ‘I Can See Clearly Now’.

The series is produced by Barking Films for BBC Northern Ireland.

Bob O’Brien, series producer/director, said: “This is a charming series of programmes that will make you smile endlessly. You just never know what the children will come out with next.”

Our Wee World – The Glens is on Sunday, January 27 on BBC One Northern Ireland at 6.05pm.
