Conflict Revolution tells the story of one comic’s mission to take the "fun" out of Northern Irish politics.
Dublin-born comedian Andrew Maxwell aims to de-commission his "troubles" material with two gigs on the same night on the Shankill and Falls Road. A natural wit and charmer, Andrew embraces one of his favourite cities and brings his own unique take on the good, the bad, and the ugly of our unique situation.
A first for everyone concerned, this ambitious programme aims to give a new take on our past, asking can humour unite what religion and politics divides?
Can Andrew, an internationally renowned Dublin comic compete for the attentions of the people of the Shankill in the Spectrum Centre on May 1 – international day of revolution - and then travel across to the Falls to perform in front of an audience in The Rock Bar later that night?
The intrepid social commentator and political protagonist’s on a mission
to liberate minds with the power of comedy.
Born from the bloodlines of two street preaching grandfathers in the heart
of Dublin, the passion to speak out has always been rich in his veins and
this is most evident when he's in front of an audience.
Andrew's natural flair for commentary and the urge to challenge folk and change perspectives led him to the world of stand up comedy and its open mic forum. It was in 1992, aged 18, that he took the stage for the first time at a local club run by Ardal O'Hanlon.
Two years later he went on a mission to crack the rest of the world and has been prolific on the international stand up circuit ever since.
Raymond Lau, producer of Conflict Revolution, said: “Conflict Revolution has been one of the most challenging projects I have ever worked on. Ten years on from the Good Friday Agreement, the two most iconic roads of the city are still divided by a peace line. By using the unique talent of Andrew Maxwell, one of the comedy world’s most renowned headline acts, we hope to show that humour can unite what history and politics have traditionally divided.”
Conflict Revolution is on BBC One Northern Ireland on Monday May 26 at 10.50pm.
