feeding time at Belfast Zoo
About the Programme

Cheeky monkeys, lounging lizards and numerous exotic creatures from all over the world have been providing the animal magic enjoyed by visitors to Belfast Zoo for more than 70 years.

Our television cameras have got unrivalled access to the animals and the keepers, who make it one of Northern Ireland’s most popular attractions.

The series gets access to the behind-the-scenes operation, including the keepers, the curators and the vets. It also examines the crucial conservation role played by the zoo. Belfast Zoo is unique in that it is the last remaining publicly-funded zoo in the UK.

The series offers a chance for people to see the complex operation that normally goes unseen and also to get a glimpse of the antics of the animals when they’re out of the public gaze. There’s more to the zoo than just keeping animals – this series gives viewers the chance to get close to them.

The zoo has an important internationally-respected conservation role. And of course while many viewers will have been to Belfast Zoo, few will be aware of the work that is done in this area by the dedicated team of workers and the challenges faced by them.

People might have a different perception of the zoo after viewing the series. But it’s the animals who are the real stars, providing plenty of thrills and spills for the cameras.

The dulcet tones of Joe Lindsay provide the accompanying narrative.
