For all you fact-fans out there, an island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water. Whether it's a desert island with just a palm tree on it or a big one like Ireland, no one gets on or off it without crossing the water first. A Hallig is a special type of island in the North Sea: it used to be part of the mainland hundreds of years ago and is flooded a few times a year. Find out more in Geology.
