Oland Fact File

Image of a young girlWillkommen auf Hallig Oland! This is a small island: about 30 people live close together on a mound called a Warft. Click here to find out why we need the mound. There are 13 houses on it, plus our school, St. Peter's church and parish house, a pub, and a shop. In the middle of the Warft is a pond: in the past it was a source of drinking water. We got running water in the 1960s!

Surrounding the Warft are 230 hectares of salt marshes where our sheep can graze. We don't have cars on Hallig Oland - there are no roads anyway! But every family has an electric train-car called a Lore. A set of rails on a causeway connects us to the mainland. Everything we need comes to the island on the Lore or on the ferry.
