Island Life What is an island? History Geology School Build an Island
Techers and Parents

This web site compares and contrasts the lives and experiences of the children of Rathlin Island and Hallig Oland (in Germany). It is designed for children as active, independent learners.

The web site relates to the following elements of the upper KS2 curriculum:
  • practising map-reading skills;
  • evaluating photographs and text;
  • understanding subject-specific vocabulary;
  • comparing/connecting past and present;
  • imagining and empathising with other people's lives, traditions and myths;
  • comparing two environments, cultures and languages.

Although the site works best when read sequentially, children can look at the topics in whichever order they choose. The final activity (Build an island) consolidates their learning and demonstrates to them what they have achieved.
