Hallig Oland's history is all to do with the ocean. Many islanders went to sea as fishermen and sailors - even as pirates! When they built their church, St Peter's, they decided to have a mini-steeple for the bell next to it. A regular tower could easily have been blown away in a storm. Inside the church, a model of a sailing ship hangs from the ceiling as a reminder of the past.
Shipwrecks used to happen all the time, because of bad storms, dangerous sandbanks and tricky tides. In the old days, the people who lived on the Hallig were allowed to keep all the cargo that was washed ashore after a shipwreck. What would your favourite shipwreck cargo be?
