If you put a flower in a glass with salty water, it will die. But the plants that grow in the saltmarshes around Hallig Oland can all cope with salt water. Glasswort stores salt and water in its thick green stems. Many islanders like eating them in their salad - guess what flavour they are!
Salt marshes have special grasses (sheep love the salty taste!) that get rid of salt by evaporating lots of salty water. On a hot summer's day you can see salt crystals shimmering on the grass as the water evaporates.
