ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
Lydia and Matthew, our two junior presenters, love animals and in this unit of three programmes they explore ways in which we can care for some of the creatures around us. The programmes are based on the skills and qualities needed in providing for the health and welfare of tame animals at home and wild animals living in captivity.
In the second programme Lydia and Matthew will discover how people care for cats and dogs. Initially we hear from other children and how they looked after stray or newborn animals. Other children also talk about their pets and the various characteristics that make them lovable. However as the programme continues we find out that other animals are not as lucky. Matthew and Lydia go to visit the Assisi Animal Sanctuary to meet Dave, the manager. Dave explains how the centre cares for animals including cats, dogs and even goats! We also meet Henry, a cross between a dachshund and a Jack Russell! One of the most important people we meet is Heather, the dogs and puppy section leader. Heather looks after the records and requirements for each dog and ensures that all the animals are looked after and exercised. However the shelter also looks after cats and we meet Sinead, the leader of the Cats' department. The centre also has volunteers who come to Assisi just to help walk the dogs! As the programme concludes Matthew and Lydia come to learn that looking after a pet is a very big commitment!
By the end of the programme pupils should be able to:
-
Recall and reflect upon how animals are cared for
-
Understand some of thereasons why people love their pets
-
Recognise the fact that some people do not care for their pets as well as others
-
Understand the Key words
