ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
This programme focuses on the difficulties that newcomers
from other parts of the world face in settling into new schools
and communities. From a historical viewpoint it explains the
reasons for mass emigration from Ireland to America as a result
of the 'Great Hunger'. It describes the conditions of travel
and how newcomers were accepted into a new life in the land
of opportunity.
In a modern day setting the programme then highlights a number
of case histories of children from overseas who found it difficult
to feel at home in a new country expecially when there were
language difficulties. Children such as Natalia from Poland,
Tatiana from Portuagal, Payal from India and Anastasia from
the Ukraine explain their anxieties.
On a positive note, the programme describes how schools are
promoting welcoming, caring and friendly environments. The
programme concludes by examining ways and means that make
it easier for newcomers to settle in
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the programme pupils should:
- understand that we live in a multi-cultural society
- explain the differences between the terms, immigrant and
emigrant
- understand the reasons for mass emigration to America
due to the 'Great Famine'
- explain the difficulties that immigrants face due to language,
culture and custom
- compare and contrast different environments and living
conditions
- describe ways that make it easier for newcomers to settle
into schools and communities.
