Famine

Other topics

A famine occurs when a large group of people die due to a severe shortage of food. The Irish Famine lasted five years between 1845 and 1850. During these years the potato harvest was destroyed by blight and poor people who depended on potatoes starved. Weakened with hunger, people were more likely to catch diseases such as typhus. By the end of the famine around 1 million died of starvation and hunger-related diseases.
