Primary Themes Maths will help pupils develop mental mathematics skills, in particular their own use of personal methods of calculation. It will also help them understand and use mathematical vocabulary, extend mathematical reasoning and help them identify the maths they need to use.
AIMS OF THE SERIES
This series is intended to provide a context for the application of numeracy in the environment. Using familiar situations, the children are asked to solve problems across all areas of the Northern Ireland Mathematics Curriculum.
The main focus of each programme is to:
develop the pupils' skills in mental mathematics, in particular their own use of personal methods of calculation.
understand and use correct mathematical vocabulary.
extend mathematical reasoning.
identify the mathematics they are required to use.

Although this series has finished, you can still search for programme information, teacher notes and worksheets in the site. Programmes are still available to borrow or purchase from the Audio Visual Recording service at SELB. Just quote the SELB number that can be found below or on the programme page in your correspondence with the unit.
The Maths Pack referred to throughout each programme is a vital component of the learning experience. It is available for downloading at the end of each section of programme notes.
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT TEACHERS PROVIDE PUPILS WITH A COPY OF THE WORKSHEETS BEFORE EACH PROGRAMME.
NORTHERN IRELAND CURRICULUM
This series may be used to support mathematics at both Key stage 1 and 2. While each programme addresses one or more statutory requirements of Number, Measures, shape and Space and Handling; Processes in Mathematics permeates all ten programmes.
