Ten radio programmes for P1, Reception, Nursery, Playgroups, Crèches, Day Care and children listening at home. Through a mixture of local stories, songs, poems and rhymes, and using familiar speech and language, early skills and concepts for future use in literacy and numeracy are introduced.

Although this series has finished, you can still search for programme information, teacher notes and worksheets in the site. Programmes are still available to borrow or purchase from the Audio Visual Recording service at SELB. Just quote the SELB number that can be found below in your correspondence with the unit.

1. The Happy Hedgehog Band
The Hurley-Burley man introduces himself and his van and encourages the listeners to respond and to join in.

2. Wendy from Warrenpoint
A programme about the weather is a good excuse to explore ‘w’ sounds: e.g. wet, windy, water, wellies etc.

3. Farmer Kelly’s Mix-Up
Rhymes, a story and a song all about animals, and with lots of noises to join in with.

4. Grandpa Gets Into Mischief
There are lots of ‘2’s in the programme – parts of the body, in the song and rhyme, and in the happy story about Simon and his Grandpa.

5. Owl Babies
The number ‘3’ is featured this week with a rhyme, a song and Martin Waddell’s classic story about the three baby owls.

6. Going to Granny’s
There are more animals this week, and an invitation to join in making their sounds.

7. Jamie’s Surprise
A ‘clean’ programme, a song to join in with, and a story about a visit to a launderette.

8. Liam the Leprechaun
Re-enforcing the names of the most popular colours and featuring a story and a song about a leprechaun.

9. The Tailor and the Button
A programme about clothes, a traditional story and a nonsense song.

10. Cap’n Sheena’s Sea Shanty
A programme about the sea, and emphasising ‘s’ and ‘sh’ sounds.

Story based, with associated rhymes, poems, songs and music. Each programme invites the children to respond to direct questions, to join in the actions or the words of the songs, to predict outcomes, and to share in the enjoyment of a good story enhanced with sound effects.
