Q.
What impact do you think a super-route would have on Belvoir Forest
A.
First of all I would say that it shouldn't be a bus super-route.
It should be for buses and Heavy Goods Vehicles. I think the impact
could be minimalised by planners in the way that they would put
together the planning for the super-route and in the way they develop
it so they could actually enhance the area and try and protect it
as much as possible.
Q.
What is the effect of doing nothing?
A.
Firstly, if things are left the way they are, we are only going
to get more congestion on the route into Belfast. More congestion
means more exhaust fumes, more exhaust fumes means more damage to
the environment and therefore we have to look at other ways of moving
traffic. I believe that we should be looking at reducing traffic
on the roads. I don't think we can reduce the number of lorries
on the road. In the UK we have 422,000 lorries on the roads over
3.5 tonnes but over 23million cars. So the problem aren't the lorries,
but the cars. We have to find ways of reducing the cars on the road.
I also think that you have to look at it, for instance, one load
of goods delivered to a supermarket, one 40 foot load of goods,
it takes 500 cars to take away the goods that were delivered by
that one 40 footer. So that puts it into perspective, the difference
between a lorry and cars.
Q.
What is your preference for the future of transport?
A.
First of all I would like to see the government invest more in roads.
Instead of taking the 35billion from tax on vehicles, from cars
and from petrol and diesel tax and using 85% of that in other areas,
we should be investing more in our infrastructure. We should also
be investing more in our public transport system to encourage car
owners to leave their cars at home and use public transport. We
need a good reasonable, reliable public transport system to encourage
people to take their cars of the roads and free up the roads for
essential transport.
