Across Europe rail is seen as the backbone of public transport networks and a real alternative to the car. Due to decisions taken in the 1950s, Northern Ireland’s once extensive rail network has shrunk to a few lines in the east of the Province.
A recent review of local rail services revealed that minimum safety standards could not be maintained without more money being invested in rail tracks and equipment.
