Once we had split the friendship groups up, we had four separate groups of five pupils, who wouldn’t have previously been together. A mixture of sex, a mixture of ability and a mixture of personality. That was to enter into our enterprise activity, which was called ‘Making Gift Bags.’

They were divided up into four different production floors within quite a wide space of the library and they were given all the different resources that they needed alongside a set of rules that they had to go by and they were to produce gift bags. One of the teachers was the banker, and I was the quality control person. They bought and rented out the different resources they needed and then they were given an hour, and at the end they were paid according to what they had produced and the quality to which it had reached.

They were working in teams. Some were making gift bags individually, others had ‘You’ll do the cutting out, I’ll do…’ and some had leaders, some hadn’t. We didn’t tell them how to do it, but we found the different production methods there – and they weren’t even aware of them. At the end, they were paid and graded and marked according to which team had produced the best bags, not necessarily the most bags.
