Careers toolbox: PDF's and RTF's

What are PDFs and RTFs and which should I use?

There are lots of different resources on this web site - many are documents that you can print or save. Most documents are available as PDFs, RTFs or both. Each document type is useful for different reasons.

If you want to save a document so you can open it and add your own text later, you should choose an RTF.

If you want to print or save a document that you don’t want to edit, you should choose a PDF.

To save and edit a document - choose RTF

RTF stands for Rich Text Format. This type of document can be opened and edited by most word-processing programs.

How to save an RTF to your desktop

  • Click File in the top left-hand corner of your screen
  • From the menu that appears, select Save As
  • In the Save As dialog box, you enter a name for your file and save it as a word document
  • You can then open and edit the document on your computer

To print or save a read-only document - choose PDF

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. This type of document will have a print-quality finish, but you won’t be able to edit it.

To read or download the document, you’ll need the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in, which most computers already have. If you don’t have the plug-in, you can download for free from here.
